NEW YORK NEW YORK THE
EIGHTIES
- After the
demise of The Police...let's back up. The Police were beginning
to attract a lot of industry attention. Early on, they would
pack every club where they performed. The energy that came off
the stage during their concerts was enough to exhaust anyone
in the immediate crowd. Of course, it helped that two of the
members had been with the hit-making band Abraham's Children.
Their fans loved these boys and followed them from city to city.
This band was hot. The group and its management company Strawberry
Productions were being schmoozed and entertained by many of the
major record labels. Frank Bennett, one of the principal owners
of Strawberry, decided to weigh all his options before committing
to anyone. During one of the band's gigs they were approached
by A&M Records. This was not the first time that A&M
had been lurking from the sidelines as the boys rocked the venue.
Strawberry decided they would meet with the label and discuss
what they were ready to offer the band. It all sounded good,
but for one small detail. They wanted the group to change its
name. The band was shocked and couldn't understand why they would
want them to change the name. It was a great name, inviting all
kinds of marketing ideas, not to mention that they already had
a big following. The band decided not to change its name. Within
a couple of weeks after that meeting A&M announced that they
had signed a band in England called The Police who had just released
its first single called Roxanne. Jimi and the rest of the group
were furious and expected that A&M had known all along. The
band decided to take a break, during which time they would think
about a new name. It never happened. The guys would all go their
separate ways. Ironically, Jimi would end up signing as a solo
artist with A&M Records and release his self-titled album
Jimi B. and that's another story in itself. Reporter Kant Gettalon

Phoenix Theatre Toronto - Jimi, Bob Abbott and famed bass player
Prakash John at the Long & McQuade 50th anniversary bash.
Prakash was born in Bombay, India, John immigrated to Toronto
in 1960. A late bloomer, he picked up his instrument for the
first time at the age of 19. He was quickly in demand as a bassist
in Toronto, and began his broader career with the Canadian band
Bush. Bush, the successor to Canadian band Mandala, was largely
the brainchild of Canadian guitarist Domenic Troiano. After Bush,
John became an influential player in the Los Angeles scene, playing
with Parliament/Funkadelic on the albums Chocolate City and America
Eats Its Young among others. He later appeared on influential
rock albums of the 1970s such as Lou Reed's Rock n Roll Animal
and Sally Can't Dance, and Alice Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare,

Hi,I just recently came across the website of Abraham's
Children, oh the memories came flooding back to 1974 when they
played at our school Queen Elizabeth Composite High in Edmonton,
my girlfriends and I had the opportunity to meet and spend sometime
with them. It was a wonderful day and one that won't be forgotten.
I received at the time their drum cover signed by all four.(Jimi,
Brian, Ron, Bob) One of them had the nickname SquirrIey, I think
it was Brian. I kept the drum cover around for years until my
parents decided that it neeed to go once I left home. After touring
the website, I was sadden to hear about Brian, I still remember
his sense of humor and how the four of them could be the best
of friends one minute and angry the next and it was Brian who
always turned things around. When we the girls get together and
reminisce about old times, this is alway brought up, I wonder
what happened to Abraham's Children and now I can share the website
with them. This has been a great afternoon touring the website
and catching up on Abraham's Children. Carol Fort McMurray, AB

Abraham's
Children perform at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto, Canada.
They would attract the biggest crowd ever. An estimated 50 thousands
fans would show their appreciation. The stage was rushed with
hundreds of teens before the security personal could get them
off the stage. "The band signed almost 3000 autographs as
fans lined up for hours" said manager Jack Morrow. This
was the kick off to their highly acclaimed Lock Up Your Daughters
Tour. They would perform in 55 cities across Canada and the US.
It was non-stop. The band complained that they saw so many airports,
that at times, they would forget what city they were in. To catch
an AC live show was an unforgettable musical event (read

UXBRIDGE, ONT.The TRYPP (IUPDATE) Brian
Cotterill former member of the hit making band Abraham's
Children steps out and TRYPPS to some new music. It's been many
years for the crooning AC drummer as he attempts to bring his
new unit The Trypp to the forefront of the scene. After
almost thirty years Brian puts an impressive line up together
to challenge the
serpents of a dying industry as we know it. The band has recorded
two cd's the first was simply The Trip until research found that
there were a 1000 other bands out there with the same name...not
counting the hundreds from the 60's and 70's. The newest cd is
a collection of seven songs and titled Seven Deadly Singles...duh
recorded at Phase One in Toronto, Canada. Paul Cormier performs
some pretty hot licks on the keys and gives it that authentic
sound. Paul has been around and played with some of the best
groups and musicians in Eastern Canada including the poplar group
Boulevard. Richard Joudrey, lays down some tight bass riffs and
keeps the groove consistent. He's no stranger to the circus of
music. Richard was part of Blue Peter and still tours with them
when needed. His strong ear for music has led him to producing
many indie bands. In 1983 Richard won best video at the Canadian
Film and Television awards.Cranking the guitars to the limit
is Screaming E. E has had the pleasure of working on many cds
and still finds time to produce and do sessions on a regular
schedule. Being the new kid in the band everybody still likes
him. Be sure to catch The TRYPP in concert and check out their
new cd here (get
